About the Artist

I have been painting most of my life since my mother purchased my first tray of primary watercolors and a brush from the family hardware store.  I began the study of art at Presentation High School, San Francisco for four years graduating with an award in art in 1966.  Throughout my college years, marriage, motherhood, and a nursing career, I traveled and pursued my love of art in needlework and photography.  Travel and photography reawakened my desire to translate the experience of “place” into an expression of brush art.

In 1992, I continued my formal art studies at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, California. Exploring many different art mediums, I prefer the unique challenges of watercolor painting. I have studied with  Jennifer Almodova at the Academy and in Half Moon Bay, California.

Traveling often, most recently in Turkey, Central Europe, Alaska and Japan, I paint small plein air watercolor sketches of my experiences, locking in the richness of color that digital images often distort.  Painting allows me to combine elements or manipulate color in ways that create a perception of reality.

My studio paintings, the bulk of my portfolio, reflect a journey through natural and architectural elements that define special places.   Looking for the hidden elements of a place, I select small visual memories to paint rather than the more commonly painted iconic scenes.  There are scenes of daily life, or of life in the past.  At times my 'place' is a plant or flower from a famous garden. The subjects can be composites of images.  While my plain air sketches are quick records of color and line, my studio paintings are carefully composed and painted over a great deal of time.  Above all I try to allow my paintings to reflect my journeys, expressing my love of color with traditional transparent watercolors and under-painting techniques.  It is a great honor to participate in juried competitions or to receive an invitation as a featured artist for a solo exhibition.
